  • Keynote Topic: Highlights From 30 Years of Raptor Migration Studies in Inland Western North America

How did an eastern U.S. hawk watcher come to discover and study raptor migration in the Rocky Mountain West? In what ways do eastern and western North American raptor migrations differ? When is “prime time” for observing raptor migration in the Rocky Mountain West? Where do the migrating raptors (that pass through the Rockies) originate, where do they over-winter, and what pathways do they use en route? What have we learned about the health and trends in western raptor populations based on 30+ years of migration counts? Do the birds deposit “pre-migratory fat” before initiating their migration, and how often do migrants stop to hunt along the way? How does the migratory behavior of juvenile raptors differ from adults? Males vs. females? How is raptor migration in the inland West generally influenced by regional and local weather patterns? How are oil & gas development, global warming and other environmental changes impacting the health of western raptor populations? These are some of the questions Steve will attempt to answer in his PowerPoint illustrated presentation.

Plus: Our annual business meeting including the vote for board members, information on fall sites, vendors, raffle prizes and refreshments!

Steve Hoffman, Executive
Director of Montana Audubon (headquartered in Helena), grew up in eastern Pennsylvania and began hawk watching at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary as a freshman college student more than 40 years ago. Steve began his formal career as a Wildlife Biologist for the Bureau of Land Management in Arizona, and later worked as an Endangered Species Specialist for the US Fish & Wildlife Service in Albuquerque. In 1986
Steve founded HawkWatch International (HWI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to raptor migration study and public education, focusing primarily on the western US. From 1976 through 1999 Steve established more than a dozen new standardized, season-long, science-based spring and fall raptor migration counts. In 1999 Steve left HWI and returned to his home state to become Director of Bird Conservation for Audubon Pennsylvania. In 2004 Steve moved to Bozeman, MT, to serve as Director of Keystone Conservation. Steve has authored more than 30 scientific papers on raptors and other wildlife-related topics, and has given hundreds of presentations on raptor migration to audiences across the US. Steve has
an M.S. degree in Wildlife Ecology from Utah State University (1979), and a Bachelor’s degree in Psycho-Biology (1973).
