Mass Audubon Joppa Flats and Eastern Mass Hawk Watch
2010 Spring Hawk Watch Program

Want to learn more about the spring hawk migration that takes place every year right here in Massachusetts?  Or maybe you did not know about this annual phenomenon.  Either way this promises to be an educational and fun event for anyone interested in raptors!

For those that want this can be a two part program.  Sunday morning lecture, video and live birds of prey and late morning field trip at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

Each year millions of birds of prey migrate north in the spring to their summer grounds in Northern United States. Of those millions of hawks moving north thousands of them migrate through Massachusetts and New England.

Join Shawn Carey and Craig Jackson of Eastern Mass Hawk Watch and Joey Mason for an introduction to Hawk Watching in Eastern Massachusetts and the North East United States. View Shawn’s video “Looking Skyward” A Passion for Hawk Watching. Also learn where and when to watch birds of prey as they migrate north for the spring and summer. Craig Jackson will talk about the spring count taking place at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Finally there will be a live bird of prey demonstration on Kestrels by Joey Mason. Joey will give a short presentation titled Kestrels and Cranberries.  As the cranberry growing season progresses, so does the life of a kestrel. Kestrel populations are decreasing and there are a lot of theories why. Two live kestrels will attend for up close and personal looks. This promises to be an informative morning that any raptor enthusiast won’t want to miss.

"Looking Skyward” A Passion for Hawk Watching (DVD)

Hawk watching has become one of the most popular types of "bird watching". This video examines why people watch hawks, explains some of its long, storied history, and explores some of the prime locations for viewing hawk migration in Eastern U.S. (Mount Wachusett, Mount Watatic, Hawk Mountain and Cape May). Video footage (from Don Crockett) includes a wide range of raptors in flight as well as interviews with Pete Dunne, Bill Clark and Laurie Goodrich of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary just to name a few.
