Annual Birding and Supper Event, hosted by Dotty Brown

Join us for a long-standing tradition in ECOC — started by Sarah Robbins and Dotty Brown over 20 years ago — birding Eastern Point during spring migration.  Even if the weather is uncooperative for birding, you will enjoy the company and unobstructed ocean view from Dotty’s wonderful seaside home!  Come early for birding with your families and/or guests, BYO sandwiches (or sushi).  Dotty provides beverages and bird-inspired cakes.  Don’t miss this delightful, informal gathering of ECOC members — new and old!

Directions: Dotty’s house is at 45 Fort Hill Ave, Eastern Point, Gloucester (978-283-3247). Take Rte. 128 North to Gloucester. Follow signs for “East Gloucester, Eastern Point” (ocean will be on your right). The entrance to Eastern Point will be on your right, marked by two stone pillars on either side. Ignore the sign that reads “Private Road” and follow the meandering narrow road that leads out to Eastern Point. Bear left onto Fort Hill Ave. in about a half-mile. Follow road to end, where you will find Dotty’s home on the ocean.

Ipswich River Canoe Trip and Bird Survey

Event Coordinator: Robert Buchsbaum rbuchsbaum@massaudubon.org or 978-927-7579.

Participate in the 106th ECOC birding trip down the Ipswich River!  Arguably the oldest uninterrupted bird-count in the world, this event is timed to get the best views of birds before full leaf-out, but late enough in the season to get better weather for paddling.

The annual ECOC Canoe trip is on May 19th starting at 6AM. The put in point is the state canoe landing on Rte 97 at the Ipswich River in Topsfield (Rte 97 & Juniper Lane - see map below). The take out point is the landing on Topsfield Rd about 1 mile north of Asbury Street at Bradley Palmer State Park. I will need a few drivers to show up at 5:30AM to help spot cars at the take out point.

We typically finish around 11. Bring a brown bag lunch and join us for some post trip camaraderie and to go through the bird list afterward. Place TBD.

Please let me know if you plan to attend. rbuchsbaum@massaudubon.org  or 978-927-7579

If you don't have a canoe or kayak, let me know. We can try to hook up people with canoes with those who do not have one. As an alternative, Carol Decker has once again offered to make some canoes available from the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary. If you chose that option, you would start there and join us en-route. You would need to canoe back to the landing at some point.

All participants MUST wear a PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE or will not be able to participate.

Please check the weather conditions prior to the event and plan accordingly.
