Come bird watching with the Cape Cod Bird Club!

All are welcome to join our field trips. There is no fee and no registration, unless noted. A call or e-mail to the leader is appreciated. Please check this site often for additional trips or other changes.  In case of inclement weather, check with leader!

APRIL 2008

April 28 - MON - 8 -10:30 AM Bells Neck Conservation Area, Harwich.  We’ll look for vireos, warblers and other early spring migrants. Ducks, shorebirds, and marsh wren are possible. Meet on Bells Neck  Rd in Harwich between East and West Reservoirs. Leaders: Nancy Reider & Ruth Connaughton. Contact Ruth at (508) 432-1580.

April 28 - MON - 8:45 AM Mashpee River Woodlands. Meet in the parking area on Quinaquisset Ave.  From Mashpee rotary take Rte 28 towards Hyannis. Take first right onto Quinaquisset Ave. Parking area is on the right. We will carpool to River Road and walk back to the main parking area. MAY 2008

May 7 - WED - 8 - 11 AM East Sandwich Game Farm. We'll look for migrating warblers, and nesting birds. The East Sandwich Game Farm is a 133 acre state- owned property, managed by Thornton Burgess Society. Meet at the Game Farm parking lot, located on Rte 6A, east of Old Colony Rd and the East Sandwich Post Office on the west side of Scorton Creek.  Leader: Ellie Winslow 508-888-1760 or birderellie@verizon.net.

May 9 - FRI - 8:15 -10:00 AM Long Pond/Falmouth.  We’ll look for migrants and nesters in the area around Long Pond.  Meet in the small parking lot just off the west side of Gifford St (this is one of the entrances to Goodwill Park) about 0.5 miles north of the intersection between Jones Rd and Gifford St. I encourage folks to show up early for “advanced scouting”; I can’t show up until 8:15 due to daycare duties. May 10 - SAT - 7:30-9:30 AM Ryder Conservation Area, Sandwich. Over the last couple of years we have seen Parula, Magnolia, Yellow, Yellow-Rumped, Prairie, Pine, Black & White Warblers, Ovenbird and  Yellowthroat, Great-Horned's calling during day, as well as Orchard Oriole, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Red-Eyed Vireo, and Scarlet Tanager.  Meet at the conservation parking lot on South Sandwich Rd, just north of the Sandwich/Mashpee town line. May 16 - FRI - 8:15 -10:00 AM Long Pond/Falmouth. We’ll look for migrants and nesters in the area around Long Pond. May 17 SAT - 8:00 - Noon Mass Audubon Long Pasture Sanctuary. Meet in the parking lot. After birding the Sanctuary grounds, and depending on weather and bird activity, we will visit other local spots along 6A in Barnstable and Yarmouth Port. Bring a snack and water, but we do not plan on continuing past lunchtime unless the birding is so fantastic that nobody wants to leave!  Directions to Long Pasture Sanctuary: From Rt 6, take exit 7 (Willow Street) to Yarmouth Port. Go north one mile on Willow Street, take a left onto Rt 6A West, go one mile, and take a right on Bone Hill Road (look for a small sign).

May 30 - FRI - 5:30AM Wompatuck State Park, Hingham. Meet at the Stop and Shop on Route 6A in Sandwich to carpool. This area, is a relatively large tract of woodland and wetland habitats that is a wonderful stopover for migrating songbirds and a nesting locale for a wide variety of birds.  Target birds here include Hooded Warbler, Worm-eating Warbler, Blue- winged Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker.  We’ll bird until the latter portion of the morning and be done by noon. JUNE 2008

June 1 - SUN - 7 - 11:00 AM Waquoit Bay/Washburn Island, Falmouth ­ Kayak Birding! We’ll kayak around Washburn Island and watch for shorebirds, wading birds and Osprey while paddling.  Meet at the White’s Landing parking lot on Rte 28 in East Falmouth just west of the Childs River Marina, we’ll put in from there. June 2 - MON - 8:45- 3:00 PM Main streets and backroads of Mashpee. Meet at Honey Dew Donuts on the corner of Cape Drive and Route 28 near the Mashpee/Barnstable town line. June 11 - WED - 6:30 AM Morris Island, Chatham. Meet at the Monomoy NWR parking lot on Morris Island. We’ll look for shorebirds, terns, gull and other passerines that are stopping by on their way north or stopping to stay and breed. Leader: Ginie Page (508) 349-6810.

Pilgrim Heights Hawk Watch 9:00 AM ­ Noon (Most Days).  Stop by for a visit to the premiere hawk watching site on Cape Cod. In partnership with the Eastern Massachusetts Hawk Watch, Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary has sponsored a hawk watch at Pilgrim Heights to document the passage of hundreds of raptors from late March to early June. Park in first parking lot and take Small Swamp Trail to the second overlook.  Leader: Don Manchester, Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary Staff Member, 508-349-2615.

Beech Forest

As in the past, the Club will have a walk in the Beech Forest in Provincetown each Saturday and Sunday morning in May. The Beech Forest is one of the best places on Cape Cod to see and hear spring migrants.  Take the Race Point Exit off Route 6 at the light in P’town. Meet in the Beech Forest parking lot.  All walks begin at 8 AM, but birders may wish to do an earlier loop and then meet for the official trip. Leaders:
